Abortion is a medical procedure, and like any procedure, it comes with risks. Understanding these risks can help you make an informed decision that supports your overall health and well-being.
At Vida Medical Clinic, we provide clear, compassionate care as you explore your pregnancy options. We offer no-cost services, including pregnancy testing, limited obstetrical ultrasounds, and accurate information, so you don’t have to navigate this decision alone.
Abortion Risks
There are two primary types of abortion: medical and surgical. Each carries its own risks depending on your health, how far along you are, and where the procedure takes place.
Medical Abortion (The Abortion Pill)
Typically used in early pregnancy (through 10 weeks), a medical abortion uses two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, to end a pregnancy. This process is usually done at home.
Serious risks include:
- The body not releasing all pregnancy tissue in the uterus, also called an incomplete abortion (this may require surgical treatment)
- An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
- Heavy and prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Fever
- Digestive symptoms such as upset stomach
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortions are performed in a clinic or hospital and involve removing the pregnancy through suction, instruments, or both. These procedures are usually done later in pregnancy.
Risks can include:
- Uterine perforation
- Cervical injury
- Infection
- Scar tissue inside the uterus that can cause menstrual changes and may affect future fertility (also called Asherman’s syndrome)
