All the different information out there can make learning what to do when pregnant stressful and even scary, but it doesn’t have to be. There are three reasons why an ultrasound is necessary.

1. Learn How Far Along You Are

Different options may be available based on how far you are in your pregnancy (gestational age). Approximately half of women are inaccurate with the date of their last period. (source) Birth control can also be a factor in dating as well.

2. Confirm the Pregnancy is Inside the Uterus

Ectopic pregnancies occur when the pregnancy develops outside of the uterus, which can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated with a provider.

You should seek emergency medical help if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Severe abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Lightheadedness or fainting
  • Shoulder pain

3. Ensure You Haven’t had a Miscarriage

Finally, ultrasounds will determine if there is a heartbeat. One in four pregnancies end in miscarriage, most in the first trimester.

Possible Signs and Symptoms of a Miscarriage:

  • Pain or cramping in your lower back or abdomen
  • Vaginal spotting or bleeding
  • Fluid or tissue passing from your vagina

Ultrasounds can help provide crucial information about your health, well-being, and options for your pregnancy in the decision process.
